Sanat Kumar Kar

, a prominent Indian painter and printmaker, was born on July 29, 1935, in Shantiniketan, India. He acquired his diploma in painting from the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Kolkata in 1955.

Career Highlights

  • Kar began developing his printmaking abilities in the 1960s, aided by grants from Lalit Kala Akademi.
  • His first solo show at the Prints Art Gallery in 1962 presented his oil paintings.
  • He exhibited in Delhi at Triveni Kala Sangam in 1969, showcasing only his prints.
  • Kar joined the Department of Graphic Art of Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati as a reader in 1974, where he continued experimenting with wood intaglio.

Sanat Kumar Kar's experiments with wood intaglio

led to the development of new methods, including the use of plywood, sun-mica, and cardboard treated with glue. This pioneering work in printmaking has made him one of the most significant figures in modern Indian art.

Kar served as the Head of the Department of Graphic Art at Kala Bhavana and later became the Principal of Kala Bhavana, ending his teaching career in 1995. He passed away on January 9, 2023.
