Rusinol's interest in painting began at a young age. He received his training as a painter at Centro de Acuarelistas de Barcelona under the direction of Tomás Moragas. In 1889, he traveled to Paris, where he lived in Montmartre with fellow artists Ramon Casas and Ignacio Zuloaga.
Much of Rusiñol's work in Paris belonged to the Symbolism painting style. His time in Paris also introduced him to modernism, which he later applied to his works. As a pioneer of Catalan modernisme, Rusiñol influenced notable artists, including Pablo Picasso.
