Biography:
Saro Zagari was an Italian artist born in Rimini, Italy in 1821 and died in 1897. He was a pupil of Pietro Tenerani, a prominent Italian sculptor of the Neoclassical style. Zagari was known for his chaste neoclassical style and his specialization in pious subjects. He completed numerous commissions, including the tomb of Pope Pius VIII in Rome, a colossal statue of St Alfonso de Liguori for the Vatican, and a public statue of Simon Bolivar for Plaza de Bolivar in Bogota. He also completed restorations on the Lateran Sophocles statue under Pope Gregory XVI. Among his pupils were Fedele Caggiano and Ambrogio Zuffi. Zagari was buried in the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli alle Terme Diocleziane.
