Biography:
Silke Otto-Knapp was a German artist born in 1970. She studied at the University of Hildesheim and received her MFA from Chelsea College of Art and Design in London. Otto-Knapp was known for her landscape paintings based on historical documentation of stage designs and performances. Her unique technique of layering watercolor and washing it down to apply it anew resulted in a distinctive body of work that explored conflicting spaces and tensions. She exhibited at numerous galleries and shows, including the Bienal de São Paulo, the Istanbul Biennial, and the Liverpool Biennial. She was represented by Galerie Buchholz, Cologne/Berlin/New York, and greengrassi, London. Otto-Knapp passed away in 2022 due to ovarian cancer.
