The Singer Manufacturing Company, also known as The Singer Corporation, was an American manufacturer of consumer sewing machines. It was established in 1851 by Isaac M. Singer and Edward C. Clark in New York City. The company was renamed to Singer Manufacturing Company in 1865 and then to The Singer Company in 1963. It is based in La Vergne, Tennessee, near Nashville. The company's first large factory for mass production was built in 1863 in Elizabeth, New Jersey. The Singer Manufacturing Company is best known for its sewing machines and is a leading manufacturer in the industry. The company has a long history of innovation and has produced many popular models, including the Singer Featherweight. The Singer Building, also known as the Singer Tower, was the headquarters of the Singer Manufacturing Company from 1908 to 1968. It was designed by Ernest Flagg and was the tallest building in the world from 1908 to 1909. The building was demolished in 1967 to make way for One Liberty Plaza.
