Early Life and Education

Sir Gordon Howard Eliot Hodgkin CH CBE

, a renowned British painter and printmaker, was born on August 6, 1932, in Hammersmith, London. His father, Eliot Hodgkin, was a manager for the chemical company ICI and an amateur horticulturist. Hodgkin's maternal grandfather, Gordon Hewart, was a journalist, lawyer, MP, and Lord Chief Justice.

Artistic Career

Hodgkin's first solo show was in London in 1962. He represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1984 and won the Turner Prize in 1985. In 1992, he was knighted for his services to art. Hodgkin designed a mural for the British Council in India, symbolizing the organization's work rooted in Indian culture.
