Place: Huangpu Town
Biography:
The Yaozhou Kiln is located in Huangpu Town of Tongchuan City, Shaanxi Province. It was one of the Six Famous Kilns in ancient China and also the main celadon-producing area in the north. It was reputed as the Ten-li Kiln and was notable for three-colour sancai earthenwares, black wares and other types. The kiln was some 70 miles from Chang'an (modern Xi'an), capital of the Tang until 904. Although considerably further from Kaifeng, which became the capital of the Song in 960, the Yaozhou kiln continued to produce wares for the imperial court and for the Chinese market. The Yaozhou kiln is especially famous for the rich effects achieved by decoration in shallow carving under a green celadon glaze which sinks into the depressions of the carving giving contrasts of light and dark shades.
