Biography:

Suzan Friedland is an American artist born in San Francisco in 1958. She holds a Master’s of Fine Arts degree and is an innovator in the world of contemporary textile art. Her pieces are part of the collection of the San Jose textile museum in San Jose, California, and in private collections around the country. Suzan’s work has appeared in numerous exhibitions and publications. As a lecturer and teacher of surface design, she has given workshops at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the de Young Museum of San Francisco. She was awarded a fellowship and residency at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont. She also teaches K-8 students for the ‘Art in Action’ program in Burlingame California. Recently, Suzan has attended art intensives with professor Kwok Wai Lau at the Palm Spring Arts Museum, working in watercolors and ink on paper. She has created a unique technique that combines textural elements from her years working with textiles and pigment with the particular qualities of ink on paper. Suzan’s process involves layering inked veils over splashes of muted color on paper of various sizes from small to large. One of the primary drives of her recent work is to create an effect of motion and transformation of forms, upon sustained viewing of her pieces. Suzan Friedland currently lives in San Francisco and Gualala, where she is developing a new body of work called ‘Hard-Earned Uncertainties.’
