Biography:
Fūgai Honkō, also known as Taiji Higashi, was a Sōtō Zen monk and artist born in Ise Province, Japan in 1779. He was skilled in painting, particularly known for his depictions of Dharma and Budai. Fūgai gained the nickname 'octopus Fūgai' due to his distinctive signature. He served as the 50th abbot of Eiheiji temple and oversaw the publication of a modern typeset edition of Do Gen's Shōbōgenzō. Fūgai Honkō passed away in 1847.
