Biography:
Tawatchai Puntusawasdi produces architectural three-dimensional sculpture in hardwood, slate, organic fibres, and metal. In his Tilted series, ongoing since 2002, the artist plays with perception to challenge audiences’ understanding of volume and space, so prodding us to consider philosophical and spiritual questions. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sculpture from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Chiang Mai University in 1993 and furthered his education by obtaining a Master's degree from the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture, and Graphic Arts, Silpakorn University in 2001. Tawatchai was recognized internationally when his works were selected to exhibit at the 21st Biennale of Sydney in 2018 and 2006, Bangkok Art Biennale in 2018, Jakarta Biennale in 2009 and the 50th Venice Biennale in 2000. He has also been honored with prestigious awards, including the 15th Silpa Bhirasri Creativity Grants in 2015 and creativity grants from Pollock-Krasner Foundation twice. He won the Grand Prize in Sculpture from the 1995 Osaka Triennale in Japan and the 2nd Class Honor Award, Silver Medal Award in Sculpture at the 39th National Art Competition in 1993.
