Biography:
The Tredegar Iron Works, also known as The Tredegar Iron Company, was a major ironworks in Richmond, Virginia, and the largest iron supplier to the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. The company was founded in 1837 by Welsh industrialist Samuel Homfray and was named after the Welsh town of Tredegar, which supplied much of the company's early workforce. Tredegar Iron Works supplied about half of the artillery used by the Confederate Army and produced the iron plating for the CSS Virginia, the first Confederate ironclad warship. The company continued production through the mid-20th century and is now a National Historic Landmark District, serving as the main building of the American Civil War Museum.
