Tomoo Gokita is a contemporary Japanese artist best known for his monochrome abstract figurative paintings and prints. He was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1969. Gokita briefly studied draughting and painting at a local art school before beginning his career as an illustrator, collaborating with the worlds of fashion and music, notably inspired by American subcultures of the 1960s and 1970s. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, he developed his signature style of monochromatic and greyscale painting from his career as a graphic designer. Gokita gained a strong cult following after the publication of 'Lingerie Wrestling,' a book of his work in 2000. He has released several artworks and has been featured in various galleries and museums such as Petzel Gallery, New York (520 W). Tomoo Gokita is considered one of the leading Japanese contemporary artists.
