Biography:

Viktor Tilgner was an Austrian sculptor and medailleur. He was born in Bratislava, Slovakia in 1844 and died in Vienna, Austria in 1896. Tilgner was the son of Captain Carl Tilgner and the family moved to Vienna when he was a child. He studied under Franz Schönthaler, Franz Bauer, and Josef Gasser at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Tilgner was known for his sculptures and medallions, and was a prominent figure in the neo-baroque movement. He was awarded the Prix Reichel in 1880 and was made a professor in 1883. Tilgner's most famous work is the Mozart Monument in Vienna.
