Biography:
Wang Shugang is a Chinese contemporary artist born in 1960 in Beijing, China. He studied sculpture at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) and graduated in 1985. After working as a freelance artist, he moved to Germany in 1989 and lived there for about 10 years before returning to Beijing in 2000. Wang Shugang's works often revolve around themes of isolation and loneliness, and are characterized by their use of three colors: red, white, and black. His most famous works include the 'Sweeping Monks' and 'Squatting Monks'. He is considered one of the leading artists in the post-revolutionary breakout period of the mid-1990s, referred to as Cynical Realism.
