Biography:
Václav Merklas was a Czech cartographer and engraver born in Prague in 1809. He was a pioneer in the production of terrestrial globes in the Czech language and is known for creating the first Czech terrestrial globe in 1848. Merklas was also the author of several maps included in the 'Malý zeměpisný atlas' published in 1853. He died in Opava in 1866.
