Biography:
Woldemar Friedrich von Olivier was a German history painter in the Romantic style, often associated with the Nazarene movement. He was born on April 23, 1791, in Dessau, Germany, and died on September 5, 1859, in the same city.
Woldemar's father was head of the Dessau Pädagogium, and his mother was an opera singer. He received his first art lessons from Carl Wilhelm Kolbe and Christian Haldenwang, along with his brothers Ferdinand and Heinrich. The three brothers were instructed by the Court Sculptor Friedemann Hunold. After his brothers returned from Paris, they accompanied Woldemar on a trip through the Harz mountains and then to Vienna in 1811, where he attended the Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien (Academy of Fine Arts Vienna).
Woldemar's painting style underwent a significant transformation after his return to Vienna in 1823. His work prefigured the style of Hans von Marées, and he was also influenced by the Nazarene movement. He spent some time in Munich, assisting Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld with a large fresco project depicting scenes from the Nibelungenlied at one of King Ludwig's royal residences. Nazarene movement was a significant influence on Woldemar's work, and his paintings often featured historical and biblical themes. Some of his notable works include Picture Bible in Fifty Figurative Illustrations by Olivier, which was published in 1836.
Several of Woldemar's better-known works were lost when a fire destroyed the Glaspalast in Munich on June 6, 1931.
