Place: Bruges

Biography:

The Workshop of Jan Provoost was a painting studio based in Bruges, Belgium, during the 16th century. It was led by the Flemish painter Jan Provoost (1462/65 – January 1529), who was born in Mons and later became a burgher of Bruges in 1494. Provoost was a prolific master who ran two workshops simultaneously, one in Bruges and the other in Antwerp, which was the economic center of the Low Countries. He was also a cartographer, engineer, and architect. The workshop's style is characterized by a blend of the influences of Gerard David and Hans Memling, with a strong emphasis on religious subjects. The Last Judgement painted for the Bruges town hall in 1525 is one of the few works that can be definitively attributed to Provoost. The workshop's other notable works include an unknown and anonymous panoramic Crucifixion from the village church at Koolkerke, which is on permanent loan to the Groeningemuseum, Bruges.
