Biography:
The Workshop of Severo da Ravenna, also known as Severo Calzetta da Ravenna or Severo di Domenico Calzetta, was a renowned Italian sculptor from Ravenna who was active in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. He was born in Ravenna around 1465/1475 and died in Ravenna around 1543. Severo was known for his mastery of bronze, marble, and wood sculpture. He was particularly skilled in casting bronze, producing a wide range of works, from small statuettes to large-scale sculptures. His style was characterized by a naturalistic and grotesque approach, influenced by other great bronziers of the time, such as Bartolomeo Bellano, Andrea Riccio, and Desiderio da Firenze. Severo's work was prolific and diverse, encompassing subjects such as satyrs, religious figures, and decorative objects. He spent most of his career in Padua and Ferrara, where he established several workshops and ateliers. However, he returned to Ravenna in his later years and established a successful fonderie de bronze (bronze foundry) that produced many notable works.
