Biography:
Kansai Yamamoto was a Japanese fashion designer, most influential during the 1970s and 1980s. He was born in Yokohama, Japan in 1944 and died in Tokyo, Japan in 2020. He is known for his avant-garde collections and his career-defining collaboration with David Bowie. He began his fashion career in 1971 and opened his first boutique in Paris in 1977. He was known for taking to Europe the Japanese concept of basara, the love of color, visibility and boldness. He was also known for his flamboyant irreverence and his joyous, colorful clothes. He received the Soen prize in 1967 and the Tokyo Fashion Editors award in 1977. He was also a master of Junko Koshino and a partner of Robert Lee Morris.
