Biography:
The Zapotec are an indigenous people of Mexico, with a population estimated at 400,000 to 650,000. They are concentrated in the southern state of Oaxaca, but also have communities in neighboring states. Many Zapotec have emigrated to the United States, particularly to California. The Zapotec civilization was one of the highly developed cultures of Mesoamerica, with a system of writing and a history dating back at least 2,500 years. The Zapotec are known for their art, including ceramics, and their language is still spoken by many of the population.
