Biography:
Zhou Tiehai is a contemporary Chinese artist born in Shanghai in 1966. He is known for his conceptual projects that represent his vengeance and attitude towards the self-absorbed art market. Zhou's work often satirizes much of modern Chinese art, and he takes on the role of both artist and patron, with many of his airbrush paintings rendered by assistants under his supervision. He is mostly known for appropriating the Camel advertising character that he calls Joe Camel and making large paintings that reference famous western motifs from art history. Zhou's work is exhibited widely in China and abroad, and he has served as the Director of the Minsheng Art Museum in Shanghai and the Artistic Director of West Bund Art & Design.
