Jagdish Dey initially drew goddesses and film stars in his childhood and poster art. He took his formal art training in New Delhi.He created surrealistic landscapes with ethereal cloud forms, working in oil paint, watercolour, crayon, and acrylic on canvas and paper. He made graphic art and prints. Dreamy floating images of female forms filled his canvases. He was inspired by the works of Sailoz Mookherjea, Jaimini Roy and J Swaminathan. He was impressed by the art of Paul Klee, Piet Mondrian, Toulouse-Lautrec and Gustav Klimt.
