This painting was created to celebrate the designation of Mt. Fuji as a World Heritage Site. KINUTANI Kōji does not depict Mt. Fuji as it actually appears, but rather channels the enormous natural energy that created the mountain itself. The colors used are full of life and the rich textures give a strong sense of nature’s dynamism. These unique textures are based on a fresco technique that Kinutani studied from a young age. Once the plaster base is created by mixing lime and sand, an additional mixture of sand and slaked lime is applied; before it can dry, pigment is added. This pigment seeps into the plaster releasing moisture and allowing the lime to solidify, resulting in a stone-like plaster that forms a textured surface. The process is reminiscent of the transformation of the earth itself.
