While living in Tokyo, Japan, during the early 1990s, Susan Fenton created a series of photographs of solitary figures in shallow taut spaces with headgear and props that allude to the ritualistic iconography of the Japanese culture. After printing the photographs on fiber-based paper, she brown-toned them and applied thin layers of photographic oil pigments.
