One of the “Three Great Views of Japan,” Miyajima Island in Hiroshima Prefecture is famous for its “floating” torii gate standing in the sea. The vantage point in this painting captures a view of the sea behind Itsukushima Shrine’s five-storied pagoda. There is a beautiful contrast between the red pagoda, the pink cherry blossoms, and the green pines and cedars. To the far left, the “floating” torii gate is visible at a distance. OGYŪ Tensen utilized techniques of the famous Kanō family to produce this striking piece.
