In this scene, The Virgin Mary and John the Evangelist are holding Christ’s hands. Behind his tomb are the arma Christi, or the instruments of the Passion: the spear and the sponge, the hammer and nails, the cross, the steps over which hangs the scourge, and the whipping post with the cockerel. There are also some scenes from the Passion, like the servant pointing out Peter as a friend of Christ’s (which he denies), Pilate’s hands washed of guilt, and the kiss of Judas. The composition of this painting is based on the one by Fra Angelico, in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.
